Thanks to God for my Redeemer,
Thanks for all Thou dost provide!
Thanks for times now but a mem'ry,
Thanks for Jesus by my side!
Thanks for pleasant, balmy sunshine, Thanks for dark and dreary day!
Thanks for tears by now forgotten,
Thanks for peace within my soul!

Thanks for prayers that Thou hast answered,
Thanks for what Thou dost deny!
Thanks for storms that I have weathered,
Thanks for all Thou dost supply!
Thanks for pain, and thanks for pleasure,
Thanks for comfort in despair!
Thanks for grace that none can measure,
Thanks for love beyond compare!

Thanks for roses by the wayside,
Thanks for thorns their stems contain!
Thanks for home and thanks for church,
Thanks for hope, that sweet refrain!
Thanks for joy and thanks for sorrow,
Thanks for heav'nly peace with Thee!
Thanks for hope in the tomorrow,
Thanks thro' all eternity!

firstly, MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone out there!
i can't believe Christmas is over.
although you may say that there're 12 days of Christmas... but whatever.
well, it was the usual Christmas eve family dinner at my aunt's place, then my parents, brother and i went to church for service.
and welcomed the Christmas of 2oo8 in the house of God and among loved ones.
went high greeting everyone - i think it was the pent up excitement from months ago.
its like, finally Christmas is here! i've been waiting for it since goodness-knows-when.
went home, crashed.
woke up in the morning, then church for Christmas day service!
went high greeting everyone again.
had nice curry katsu lunch at novena square with parents, then went to sleep HAHA.
relatives over for dinner, awesome food again.
got ready to go to bed, and spent the last minute of Christmas saying "merry christmas" to ben on the phone.
haha retarded shit, still can't believe we did that.
(:

rewinding a few days back, to the 23rd of december!
had some from the yangshuo team over for a Christmas party!
met the girls first at novena to get lunch and ingredients for tiff's potato salad.
then we went to the attic to paint our nails green and red :D
first to arrive were lew, jerome and ant..
jerome hid in my room while the other two helped tiff and i make potato salad and bread and butter pudding.
soon everyone came and the place was getting really busy!
sent wenbin to get white sugar from j8 but he tried to be smart and got castor sugar instead. -.-
but thank God it didn't ruin my desert.
anthony and lewis were a great help in the kitchen! such rare guys. (:
although ant kept asking for bread... he was like some starving kid haha.
after popping the desert in the oven, i took out my mahjong set and let them play.
watched them pong here and there until edmond came along to ask for dinner.
and everone ate! i was kept busy attending to everyone's needs, hardly had time to eat myself.
but i managed to, eventually.
we all went up to the attic to fool around, and exchanged presents at 930.
edmond's present from ben was hilarious, and so was jerome's from edmond. LOL.
jerome got me a snow globe thingy that plays a song! its so cute. (:
gave rai her present - hope she likes it!
later in the night when some had left already, ben deicided to style ant's hair.
and i must say it was kinda nice (: but doesn't suit ant.
so he washed it off in my bathroom lol.
then ben made me open his present to me and OMG IT WAS HEFFY!
or rather another heffy (since heffy was going to faith).
i was soooo happy :D
heffy's a soft toy heffalump by the way.
haha i LOVE it. (:
wenbin wanted to watch ong bak, so we watched it into the night up in the attic.
then the guys became little boys when the movie ended and tried imitating the muay thai moves. HAHA.
mel decided to stay over, and the rest left.
all in all, even though the party tired me out completely, i enjoyed myself to the max.
watching everyone having fun and fooling around made it all worth it.
i miss everyone again! ahwell.
oh, and thanks for all the presents that i got...
jerome for the snow globe,
kenny for the chocolates,
jolyn for the WALL.E calander,
fang for the stars,
and lastly ben for a heffy to call my own. ((:

met up with my sec4 clique on boxing day...
pat, nette, yang and leng came.
had dinner at far east and laughed so much as usual.
man, it felt good to laugh with them again. i missed those times!
leng left, then pat, nette, yang and i went to starbucks for a drink.
ended up people watching and reminiscing about the old times... about our teachers, our classmates.
ahwell it was really good catching up with them again. (:

went out with danielle on monday!
omg like FINALLY i'm seeing her again, after so long!
i miss her like hell, seriously. still do!
well, had a quick lunch and exchanged notes about our GCE trips...
then watched Yes Man after that.
the movie's so-so.
had starbucks (again) after that to continue our catching up session!
haha told her all my interesting stories. (:
then i had to leave for a family dinner.
man, i've known her for only less than a year but it feels like much more!
and she means so dman much to me omg.
i'm really going to miss schooling with her. :(
wish i could still have more time with her. :(
ohwell at least God blessed me with her friendship and company.
ILOVEYOU STINKY! (:

high tea with raveen and laurencia at goodwood park hotel yesterday!
faithie came too. (: (:
omg the food was awesome, faith and i ate so much! haha.
had a wonderful time talking with raveen and laurencia, about everything under the sun.
i'm so sad they're leaving tomorrow.. really going to miss them!
but then again i always say that whenever they go back to england.
ahwell before i know it they'll be back soon enough. (:
and hopefully raveen and i will both be going on next year's mission trip, God-willed. :D

```
well, back to the present!
its new year's eve today.
like, OMG IT'S NEW YEAR'S EVE.
time passes so insanely fast.
it seems like just yesterday that i entered JC.
ohwell, time just flies past faster when you're older i guess.
never felt like this when i was young.
sighh now i know why everyone hates growing up.
life certainly is too short.
i must say, 2oo8 was much more eventful than 2oo7.
or at least i think so.
entering JC, meeting my classmates and danielle, making tonnes of new friends, joining rocmoc, meeting the awesome team, going to yangshuo, watching my brother go through his first year of army smoothly, maintain old friendships.
man, just gotta LOVE this year. (:
although what's missing is the youth camp and mission trip..
mainly mission trip though haha.
but whatever, i'll thank God for blessing me with the oppotunities and experiences of year 2oo8.
the wounds have healed.
pretty fast, eh.
even i'm surprised.
well, they've healed well enough to consider someone else.
someone who's been there for me through my darkest moments.
someone who shares an uncanny number of things in common with me.
if only.
if only i wasn't going to australia. can't be helped, i guess.
my only wish is that when i come back, the feelings would still be there, as fresh as ever.
then all those years of waiting would not be in vain.
love?
probably.
RACHIE TAN IS BACK FROM CHINA LAND!
WHOOHOO!!
yes, i just got three days ago!
after spending the best days of the year 2oo8 in Yangshuo.
it was an absolute blast, and i really miss the place!
alright, so i shall go down the itinerary day by day with the details of the trip. (:
BEFORE DAY 1 (stay over in school), 30/11/08:
Singapore
Went to school early to help with the setting up of IT equipment for a short presentation of the trip to our parents. Parents came, spoke to teacher, and left. Then, the fun began! :D After settling down, we surprised rai because it was her birthday the next day... So I baked two batches of my brownies as her birthday cake and the rocmoc team ambushed her in the gallery and sang the birthday song for her. (: Then we all shared and ate the brownies and had fun (: I hope rai likes her presents! :D After that we all cam-whored while the guys fooled around in the hall. Then it was lights off.
us girls (:
Rai, Jingfang, Mel and I couldn't sleep for some reason, so we gave up trying and continued to cam-whore with Mel's camera. Managed to sleep for about an hour before it was time to wash-up and prepare to leave for the airport! Bus came, we boarded, and left. China, here we come!
DAY 1, 1/12/08:
Guangzhou
Flight to Guangzhou was smooth, I watched Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging because Sab said I had to watch it. It was basically crap. Hahah, not my type of show. Though I do agree with her that the guy in the show's rather hot. Haha! Went to sleep after that, and when the plane was landing I watched a bit of 10 Promises to My Dog. The puppy is soooo cute! After collecting our baggage, our 10 hour stop-over in Guangzhou began. Our tour guide picked us up in a coach and brought us touring. First stop we went to Sun-Yet Sen Memorial Hall (which is boring and a waste of time). Then we went to some big park that has a statue of five goats. It was one ugly statue. Rai, Jingfang, Tiff, Mel and I explored the park and took lotsa pictures... Met two interesting Russian tourists who both kept wanting to take pictures with us as we posed in front of a waterfall. Should've charged them, shucks. We also met this awfully cute cat! I went crazy taking pictures of it. It's the most photogenic cat I've ever met. And when it gives you that wide-eyed innocent look you just completely melt. I know I did. Hengtiong did too, when I showed him the pictures. Haha! We were whisked away to some weird monument after the park, I still don't know what it is. But by it was a river with a lovely view of the sunset with the silhouettes of buildings. Headed back to Guangzhou airport for (possibly the worst) MacDonald's dinner before embarking on a domestic flight to Guilin airport.
Guilin
At Guilin airport, another tour guide picked us up and we started our 2 hour ride to Yangshuo. Everyone KO-ed on the coach, but for some reason I couldn't sleep again. Ahwell. Reached Yangshuo Mountain Retreat at like 2am, everyone was positively shacked. Checked in and hit the sack! The retreat is awfully nice, though. Nothing what I expected. It's really small, and the 41 of us totally took over all the rooms, except for one or two others. My room was at the top on the third floor!
our room number!
I fancy it to be the attic, although there were a couple of other rooms on the same floor. But we had the best view of the Li River that flows right outside our retreat. Yes, a river flows at our doorstep. Awesome stuff. (:
roomies - mel, shuxian and briana (:
And the beds are, by far, the best beds I've ever slept on on a holiday. Within 5-10 minutes of lying down, you were guaranteed sleep. It's that comfy. I miss the bed, dammit!
DAY 2, 2/12/08:
Biking and Trekking
Group 3 and 4 (that's my group!) started Day 2 by biking, while Group 1 and 2 trekked. We were going to bike from this placed called (sorry for all the Chinese terms) Xin Ping to Jiu Ma Hua Shan (literally means Drawing of Nine Horses on Mountain). Then we'd pass our bikes to the trekking group who's meet us there, and we'd continue on foot to Yang Di.
group 4 before cycling
Well, the bikes we got were in absolutely no condition to manoeuver through the rough rocky mountain trails of the Yangshuo's country side. They were hardly mountain bikes. It was pathetic, haha. But we decided to go on with the biking expedition and we were off! So there we were, cycling along the countryside with amazing scenery surrounding us wherever we went. It was so surreal!
mel, jingfang and i against the kick-ass scenery :D
group 4 while trekking!
Unfortunately 80% of my time was spent concentrating on the road in front of me because steering the bike was hell and we weren't exactly cycling on East Coast Park pavements. Cycled to a high school near by and saw the students getting ready for their morning exercises! Omg, it was so cool! The students really put us to shame, in terms of time spent getting ready and doing the exercises. They're almost immediate in assembling and keeping quiet. The exercises are like our Aces day, only cuter. After the school D Sen's bike died for the millionth time and this time couldn't be revived. Ona almost died too, because of her bike, so finally MrYong decided that everyone will push their bikes the rest of the journey. All this happened within 1/5 of our expedition. We were indeed in China. Hahaha! Well, we left D Sen's dead bike by the roadside and continued. My group started on our News Video and WenBin and I filmed our parts. Okay, so walking and pushing our bikes was tiring, but we all pressed on. Finally dumped them at a shed after about 4 or 5 hours and started the trekking segment. Which was another 4 or 5 hours. Marvelous! Haha, everyone was positively dying, but what do to? We were in the middle of the countryside with no transport out. So we walked on. Well the scenery during the trekking part was significantly more beautiful, so we had fun revelling in the beauty of the place.We walked in between trees, alongside rivers, took three boat rides across the river and finally saw our coach. I was walking on autopilot by then, but seeing the coach lifted my spirits. My ordeal was over! Hahaha. :P
The poor CIP I/Cs still had to go to Feng Lou Village and Primary school straight after to recce the place, but the rest could go back and wash up. I KO-ed until it was time for dinner. :D
Dinner
Dinner was crap. It had Taihong throwing vegetables out the window. HAHAHAH. Oh, and I went through the whole day without lunch at all! Because lunch was crap too. Aye, all the meals in China were crap la, to sum it up. Haha only with a few exceptional dishes. But overall it was baaad.
DAY 3, 3/12/08:
Abseiling
Group 3 and 4 went abseiling, while Group 1 and 2 went rock climbing! The abseiling location was near Feng Lou Primary School, at a cave called Treasure Cave. We trekked to the foot of the cave and proceeded on the trecherous climb up the mountain to the cave. It was crazy-ass scary. I had a feeling of deja vu, and remembered climbing the glaciers in New Zealand, haha! But we all helped each other and reached safe and sound. There were two caves, actually. We climbed up to the first and higher one (let's call it Pre-Treasure Cave) and walked around, behind it to reach Treasure Cave which is slightly lower. Treasure Cave is absolutely stunning. It's not a limestone cave, it's more of a huge hole in the mountain. We had to climb down rocks to get to the floor. It was like living in the dinosaur era, uber cool! Abseiling took 5 hours, but thankfully I was one of the first few.
the guys were so bored that they resorted to building rock towers, and throwing rocks at them to try and knock them over
Haha anyway, we abseiled from between 20 to 30 storeys up! It was quite scary, but somehow I remained calm and cool, so much such that even I surprised myself! The initial fear when you step over the ledge was there, but then I slowly got the rhythm of lowering yourself and soon I actually enjoyed myself! Miracles of all miracles hahaha. Before I knew it, I had reached the ground. And my first thought was: I wanna do it again! Insane, yes I was. Lol. I was greeted on the ground by MrYong, MsLiu, Anthony and some others... God sent me a beatiful butterfly that settled on my hand when I was walking down after the abseil. I think He wanted to tell me that He was with me throughout the whole thing, and that I did it with His help. (: Anthony was postively freaked out when I said I'd bring it to him, but the butterfly flew away. :( Ohwell. Killed time by chatting and playing with my first-aid kit. Soon everyone had finished abseiling.
Rock climbing at Jiu Ping Shan
Because we had taken 5 hours to abseil, we were late for rock climbing. So MrYong made us all run like hell back to the coach. Rock climbing was at Jiu Ping Shan (Nine Bottle Mountain, I'm guessing). I was lazy so I climbed one route only... Ate cold pizza for lunch and had fun watching MsLiu climb and scream her head off. Climbing on natural rocks seriously owns climbing tiles on artificial walls! It's totaly ownage.
DAY 4, 4/12/08:
CIP at Feng Lou Primary School
Today was CIP day! Some went to the village to collect firewood and wash clothes, others cemented the school and the rest taught in the school. I was in the last group, handling pre-schoolers with Jingfang and Wenbin. We died trying to handle them. It was a long, exhausting day, and when the school day was over, I was so relieved. I'd so much rather teach the Thai kids in Lahu. They're a million times better.
rai and i with some brats
more brats
group 4's lunch (kaypoh lew)
look at edmond terrorising my kid - priceless!
Cultural Immersion with Villagers
We had stalls giving out curry, kachang puteh, hot milo and teh tarik. Money No Enough was being screened in a classroom, but I have a feeling the villagers went there for fellowship and not the movie. LOL. I was busy trying to defrost myself, so I wasn't of much help. But helped Rai out at the drinks stall after that. It was quite fun! Haha I managed to converse with a few villagers too! Rachie Tan's not a complete Chinese failure I guess.
DAY 5, 5/12/08:
Transversing
This time it was Group 2 and 4 together! Climbed up to Pre-Treasure Cave again do to transversing. The distance wasn't far at all, only from one side to the other of Pre-Treasure Cave. Then we'd abseil back down. It was relatively high up, but somehow (again) I wasn't scared. We all froze while waiting for our turns because the wind up there was crazy strong. So Lewis, Rai, Jerome and I huddled together under some jackets and played the thumb game to waste time. Transversing is something like zip line, actually. You just have to pull yourself across half way. I had to much fun I wanted to do it over and over again but Rai was freezing so we climbed down to wait at the foot of the mountain with Jingfang.
Rock climbing at Ai Shan
I climbed a bloody high route. And completed it! Hahaha, bloody hell I still cannot believe I climbed so high. hehee.
rai so pro!
Had fun fooling around with Rai, Jingfang, Mel and the other guys.. Took lotsa photos. Stupid Taihong tried to beat a cow but he chickened out. Lol, loser.
Campfire
Campfire was in a clearing near the rock climbing site. The people from our retreat brought firewood and a few BBQ pits to cook our dinner. When night fell, the flames burned bright. Dinner was not bad, everyone ate to their fill. Everyone sat around the two fires and played stupid games, and we all had so much fun. My group was like high on drugs. haha! After the games we all took pictures! Oh, and I saw a shooting star. The one and only shooting star I saw. No one else saw it, heheh. Nearing the end of the campfire the villagers set off firecrackers (cool!) and fireworks (ultra cool!) for us. Firecrackers are super loud! But the fireworks stole the show. It all came from a little box! We were all so thrilled, us bloody suaku Singaporeans. hahaha! Then there was this stick thing that you hold and from the end colourful flares will burst out. It was so beautiful. (: The whole campfire was insanely magical. There we were, sitting in a clearing in the middle of nowhere surrounded by friends and karst mountains everywhere and the lovely night sky above our heads. It was a once-in-a-lifetime epxperience. Truly truly magical.
stupid hengtiong crashed our photo haha
DAY 6, 6/12/08:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRIAN!! :D
Orienteering Race
It was like an Amazing Race in Yangshuo, omg. Group 4 took so many unorthodox routes I wanted to die from amusement.
we were NOT lost.
We probably trampled on more crops and thrashed through more bushes than any of the other groups. So anyway the race saw us climbing up to Pre-Treasure Cave again to transverse, and to some mountain to rock climb again. And we had to look out for things on our map to take pictures of too. It was tiring but fun. And even though we took a huuuuge detour to get to the rock climbing site (when it was right next to Pre-Treasure Cave), we weren't the last group! Haha.
West Street
In the evening we went to West Street in Yangshuo town to do some shopping! The street is only 200m long, but the girls and I didn't manage to complete it. Anyway the girls went crazy muying shoes and bags for their family and friends, but I didn't get much, only some bracelets for Puay to sell. Had a measly KFC dinner of popcorn chicken before we all met up to go for the Liu San Jie Show.
Liu San Jie
Directed by Zhang Yi Mou (yes, that legendary director who did the China Olympics), the cast of the show are not actors, but ordinary farmers and villagers. That was one of the beauties of it. Well the back drop was the surrounding karst mountains and the whole show was on a lake. My favourite parts were when the farmers performed on their boats. Totally amazing. The whole show was so Zhang Yi Mou-like, haha. It was absolutely positively freezing, though. My feet were numb and I couldn't feel my toes. Lol.
DAY 7, 7/12/08:
Moon Hill
After breakfast we went to climb Moon Hill!
check out the english yo
Which meant we conquered 1000 flights to reach the top. A little old lady followed us all the way to the top, before she started selling us drinks and postcards. MrYong says its a phenomenon - little old ladies will follow tourists all the way up before selling drinks. The one that followed us was 64 years old, wth! And she was walking ahead of me, kanasai. hahaha.
we made it! and sang 'yue liang dai biao wo de xin' haha so apt (:
the girls <3
the three musketeers! <3
mother and son ((:
Went back to the retreat after that to check out. :( I miss that place. Started feeling sick over lunch, felt like dying. It was the fever kind of feeling. Thankfully there was a 2 hour bus ride ahead of us so I used that time to rest.
Crown Cave
Felt better, thankfully. Crown Cave was amazingly huge. We all sat on this little tram carriage thingy into the cave, I sat with Mel and drove. It was uber fun!
it's like some mini roller coaster!
Tiff and MsLiu kept banging into us from behind though. Once in the cave we got off and explored on foot. In all we took about 2 hours. Reaching the end I started feeling sick again, and when out of the cave I had a slight fever. DIE. Took panadol and slept during the ride to Hotel Universal in Guilin. Felt way better when we reached, so shopping was still on! YAY.
Shopping
Rai, Jingfang, Tiff, Mel and I went shopping on our own. We had until 12am to report back, awesomeness! Haha. We, of course, had immense fun on our own. Half way Mel went back to the hotel and we continued on without her.
gigantuan cotton candy at only 1 yuan!
jingfang and tiff (:
I finally got my souvenier shopping done and Tiff and I had so much fun bargaining with the locals. We couldn't bargain as much as in West Street because the shops were mostly those proper ones.. But we did manage to find a few short rows of stalls, so we whacked the prices with venegence. HAHA. The shop keepers are all super polite and nice, though. They all say "man zhou" when you're leaving, even after you've slashed their prices so much that they want to cry. Ahwell, great service, I say. HAHA! I got Brian a nice leather wallet for his birthday, and I decided to splurge and buy one for myself too, since my wallet's dying. I still had a lot of money left, though. Got back to the hotel and packed my stuff. Bathed and continued packing. Rai was my roommate. :D When it was getting late, I got sick again. Slightly higher fever. And this time, I was really dead to the world. I think it was the effects of retail therapy wearing off. Haha I finally allowed myself to KO after I finished packing.
roomies for the last night! i was really dead haha.
Bed wasn't as nice as the one at the retreat, but it was good enough. And the shower had immediate hot water! LOL.
DAY 8, 8/12/08:
At Guilin Airport we saw... JAY CHOU! Yes, Jay Chou in the flesh! Omg he was in the queue next to mine at immigrations, but I had already cleared and walked on. Then this airport security personnel came up to me and this was our convo:
Security guy: (in Chinese) Hey, do you know understand Chinese?
Me: *oh shit oh shit* Err yeah..
Guy: Do you know who Jay Chou is?
Me: Err yeah..
Guy: Well, he's there. (points to where I came)
Me: Really??
Guy: (smiles and walks off)
Then I was like holy shiet and ran back. Nevin managed to get a photo of him before an immigrations officer screamed at him because cameras are not allowed in that area. I should've cleared the baggage check first, if I did I couldn've taken a photo with him and gotten his autograph! But we were all stuck queueing so we missed our chance. :( Ohwell, I got a picture of him from an airport personnel who used her phone to take a picture of him when she was driving her airport buggy. haha, everyone was all so star-struck. You could tell from their eyes.
Can you imagine, I was like less then 10m away from Jay Chou! It was so cool! I'm gonna gloat to Sweeleng and Geor. :D
```

Yangshuo was truly amazing.
i wouldn't trade it for anything.
although there were times when i totally felt like shit because of some people,
i had better friends surrounding me, supporting me.
so i was alright.
i was talking to the girls yesterday, asking them what was their highlight of the trip.
i had said that i didn't have a highlight to the trip, that everything was the highlight.
but now, reflecting on the trip, i realise that i do have a highlight to the trip.
it was the time spent with my friends.
especially this particular group, which comprises of friends whom i only got to know during the pre-trip sessions.
the trip really strengthened the bond with them, and they mean so very much to me.
it feels like forever since i've known them.
and for my awesome rocmoc mates, and my girl friends, its been less than a year but i love you guys to the end of the world.
what would i do without my girl friends, i really wouldn't know.
we huddled together, shared gloves, cup noodles, breakfast tables, gossips, and did i mention huddling together? lol.
i loved every single minute of my time with you guys.
its so sad because our time spent there would now only be a memory.
its just different here, back in singapore.
the feeling's so different.
i wish we could have those times back again.

i formed so many new friendships on the trip.
though i never would have thought that i'd lose two.
but somehow, and i don't know why, i don't feel a loss either.
even though they were important.
or so i thought.
maybe its because the scars run way too deep.
ohwell.
i honestly don't really care.
because i've got my friends with me, and that matters the most.

SRGCE Yangshuo Team 'o8

love you guys ♥

Over You by Chris Daughtry

Now that it's all said and done
I can't believe you were the one
To build me up and tear me down
Like an old abandoned house
What you said when you left
Just left me cold and out of breath
I fell too far, was in way too deep
Guess I let you get the best of me

Well, I never saw it coming
I should've started running
A long, long time ago
And I never thought I'd doubt you
I'm better off without you
More than you, more than you know
I'm slowly getting closure
I guess it's really over
I'm finally getting better
And now I'm picking up the pieces
I'm spending all of these years
Putting my heart back together
'Cause the day I thought I'd never get through
I got over you

You took a hammer to these walls
Dragged the memories down the hall
Packed your bags and walked away
There was nothing I could say
And when you slammed the front door shut
A lot of others opened up
So did my eyes so I could see
That you never were the best for me

ahhh why is this song so super apt.
just gotta love it.
